We want to see clean healthy rivers as well as a clean healthy Port Phillip Bay.&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<p>This can be achieved with ecosystem restoration in the bay <b><u>and<\/u><\/b> river restoration in the catchment, which will involve improving stormwater management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Port Phillip Bay was once a thriving ecosystem with rich, abundant biodiversity and clear water.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Underpinning the ecosystem was extensive cover of shell\ufb01sh reefs that were destroyed by decades of dredging and unsustainable extraction. Once over 50% of Port Phillip Bay\u2019s seabed was covered in critically important shell\ufb01sh reefs, a vast seascape of blue mussels and \ufb02at oysters, providing vital habitats for countless marine species.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unchecked over-harvesting of oysters over a duration of 100 years, dredge fishing, pollution and sediment runoff decimated these reefs, rendering them functionally extinct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: var(--theme-heading-color, var(--theme-heading-6-color, var(--theme-headings-color))); font-family: var(--theme-font-family); font-size: var(--theme-font-size); font-style: var(--theme-font-style, inherit); font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-weight: var(--theme-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--theme-letter-spacing); text-transform: var(--theme-text-transform); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--theme-palette-color-7);\">ECAM is working with partners to establish an ambitious restoration program involving the bay and our suburbs.
