professionally constructed about 6\u00a0years ago.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p>The area has a thick rubberised membrane overlaid with rocks, pebbles and mulch.\u00a0 The water is sourced by diverting one of the downpipes draining part of our nearby house roof.\u00a0 There is a buried pit with waterproof lining with a pump that recycles the water back up to the top of the cascade.\u00a0 This creates a gentle flow through the system.\u00a0 Any overflow from the system discharges to a series of earthen sumps lower down the garden.\u00a0 This only occcurs after exceptionally high rainfall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb5767e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb5767e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>The wetland is planted with local Australian plants &#8211; mostly indigenous species.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p><p>It&#8217;s constantly evolving with some species thriving, others struggling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b48343 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6b48343\" been<\/strong>:<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><ul><li dir=\"auto\">Carex fascicularis<\/li><li dir=\"auto\">Nymphoides montana\u00a0<\/li><li dir=\"auto\">Mazus pumilio<\/li><li dir=\"auto\">Ranunculus glabrifolius<\/li><li dir=\"auto\">Lythrum salicaria<\/li><\/ul><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">All of these now naturally reproduce in the wetland.\u00a0 Some regular control is needed to stop Carex and Ranunculus from taking over.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-515249f elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"515249f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div dir=\"auto\">Geranium solanderi and Patersonia occidentalis both do well in the margins as well as the Carex and Mazus.\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The water supply seems quite nutrient rich (lots of possum poo on the house roof is probably the main culprit) .<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Southern Brown Tree Frogs and Striped Marsh Frogs seem to come and go, but I haven\u2019t seen evidence of breeding.\u00a0 Insect life in summer is pretty interesting with Dragonflies and Damselflies common.\u00a0 Blue Banded bees love the Lythrum when it&#8217;s in flower.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">The water flow seems to avoid mosquito larvae becoming an issue but no doubt inhibits other aquatic species.<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
